ChoiceOne Bank Celeste Spivey Receives Award from FHLBI

ChoiceOne Bank is pleased to announce Vice President Community Development & CRA Officer Celeste Spivey received the Michigan 2022 Community Spirit Award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBank Indianapolis). FHLBank Indianapolis CEO, Cindy Konich, announced Spivey as the winner at their Shareholder Symposium held virtually August 31. Spivey is recognized for her outstanding work in low-income housing and community development.

“We are extremely pleased to announce Celeste as the Michigan recipient of the 2022 Community Spirit Award from Federal Home Loan Bank Indianapolis,” said ChoiceOne CEO Kelly Potes. “As a community bank, it’s important for us to know and understand the needs of the individuals, families, and businesses in the communities we serve. Celeste is a true community advocate; her work exemplifies the important role ChoiceOne plays in our communities. She has a unique talent for leveraging multiple resources to recognize and assist both our local families and businesses.”

Spivey joined ChoiceOne in 2021 as Vice President, Community Development and Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) Officer. With nearly five years of previous experience as a Community Development Administrator, Spivey currently oversees the development, implementation, and administration of all aspects of the Bank's CRA program. She is also responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with community-based, charitable, and non-profit organizations.

Spivey is a proven community leader and works with numerous nonprofit organizations to secure education and low-income housing for individuals and families in the communities ChoiceOne serves. She is actively involved with the Michigan CRA Association, Black Wall Street Grand Rapids, Habitat for Humanity, Oakland Hope, LINC UP, and the FHLBank Indianapolis.

“Celeste has a never-ending passion for helping people, which is a perfect complement to her primary charge of providing financial education and seeking low-income housing for the individuals and families in our communities,” said ChoiceOne Bank Senior Vice President, Chief Lending Officer Bradley Henion. “She has helped numerous individuals receive grants through the Homeownership Opportunities Program (HOP) to help first-time home buyers with down payment and closing assistance through the FHLBank Indianapolis. She has also been instrumental in partnering LINC UP and ChoiceOne to provide funding and secure low-income housing tax credits for a low-income housing project in Grand Rapids. Celeste has taken ChoiceOne’s CRA and Fair Lending involvement to the next highest level of performance in a short period of time.”

An active member of the community, Spivey is a Board Member of the Hispanic Service Center of Imlay City and Lighthouse Community Ministries Center.  She sits on committees for Kent County Tax Credit Coalition (VITA), Seeds of Promise, Housing Kent, and Women of Habitat Kent. In addition, Spivey serves as a Jayhawk Hub Advisory Committee Member for Muskegon Community College and as an Officer and Member of CRA Associations. She is also involved with Positive Impact for Life.

Spivey has a Master of Arts in Human Resources Development from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Davenport University in Grand Rapids.
